Innovation projects: CITEAIR

Common Information to European Air (CITEAIR) is a project co-funded by the European Union’s INTERREG IIIC Programme. The project started in March 2004 and will last for 36 months. The CITEAIR core group comprises Paris, Prague, Leicester Rome and Rotterdam.

Poor air quality
Cities throughout Europe experience environmental problems relating to poor air quality. In most urban areas, traffic is the dominant source of these adverse environmental impacts. This can contribute to human health effects, therefore local and regional authorities must take action to improve the quality of life of its citizens. Currently, administrators set their objectives based on EU air quality regulations. This has led to a variety of solutions to reporting and managing air quality, which, in many cases cannot be readily compared across different authorities. What is now required are efficient and integrated solutions for environmental and traffic management.

Common approaches
The CITEAIR project tackles these problems by focusing on the development of common approaches and sustainable solutions that can be applied throughout Europe. This will be achieved by:

  • Establishing ‘Best Practice’ of air quality and traffic management through case study reviews of existing procedures.
  • Publishing guidebooks on environmental management and air quality reporting.
  • Informing decision makers, professionals and the public on the environmental situation using tools such as a common operational website.
  • Establishing a protocol for the transfer of ‘best practice’ to other areas of Europe.

The DCMR and its local partners co-ordinate the public information part of this project and are responsible for the development of a guidebook on public communication and for parts of the common website.
