Concentrations are generally low. Sometimes the concentrations are temporarily slightly higher, for example when ships using poor quality fual are in harbour or when an industrial incident occurs. At present there is a standard for the daily mean values (125 micrograms per cubic metre of air) and a so-called alert threshold: average concentrations which for three consecutive hours remain higher than 500 micrograms. This has not happened for more than 25 years but if it did the public would be informed well before it got to this point.
